On the background of plans to revitalize Bucharest city center, I acted as key consultant on the side of the client for the Justice District (Quarter), a major public sector investment incuding over 20 judiciary institutions and meant to reintegrate a 5 ha urban wasteland in downtown Bucharest back into the life of the city. As part of my consultancy work I have reviewed the concept design proposal authored by Gensler, working alongside their design team to make sure the proposal:
- responds to the design brief
- lays the groundwork for efficient functioning of the administrative institutions and their users
- reaches its aim to revitalize the city center
- provides an iconic presence in the area
- meets legal requirements in national building legislation
- meets planning regulations for the area
The resulting proposal provided much needed modern landmarks through the shaping and height of key buildings located along major visibility lines, accomodating the large density required by the brief through a system of internal courtyards for natural light combined with locating archival and parking spaces undergrund, while connecting to the pedestrian network of the area via a walk through design at site level, populated with indoor and outdoor public uses.
