On the background of Brasov municipality updating its urban regulations (i.e., its General Urban Plan – PUG), we were commissioned to carry an analysis of landmarks based on street profiles (i.e., an altimetry study*) in three of the city’s neighborhoods: i.e., Est Zizin mainly industrial area, Noua Darste residential area and Poiana Brasov tourist resort.
Conclusions of the analysis included:
- the need to enhance the cohesiveness and walkability of the analyzed areas via, for instance, enhanced urban landscaping and facilities alongside long stretches of single use industrial or residential areas
- the opportunity to improve orientation and subsequently walkability in housing areas, via regulating for urban landmarks at key road intersections
- the opportunity to improve attractiveness and cohesiveness via integrating existing landmarks with walkable infrastructure, particularly in touristic areas
* Altimetry studies are a common fixture of urban regulations, as they highlight key information useful for urban development such as facility to orientate in different areas of the city (depending for instance on how visible local landmarks are) or walkability and cohesion of streets and areas.
